ELECTRICITY

Electricity companies have since long been interested in the use of fiber optic systems for data transmission over long distances, without electromagnetical interference.

In a power generation transport and distribution system, the different power substations (400kV, 120kV, 11kV,..) are controlled by one or more master stations. These substations are linked back to the master station by means of RTU's (Remote Terminal Units), usually on duplicated routes.

Besides data transmission, various other services need to be supported by the fiber optic network, e.g. emergency control system, telephone system, teleprotection, CCTV, etc.. A lot of the equipment in such an environment is duplicated, e.g. the SCADA computer, FEPs (Front End Processors), RTUs, etc... Hence, the fiber optic backbone should be able to reroute connections in a flexible way.

The OTN is a powerful one-step multiplexer, allowing to connect any electronic device being used in the electricity grid to a reliable fiber optic backbone, without expensive, hard-to-manage and performance-decreasing converter equipment.

SCADA systems, telephony network, CCTV for monitoring buildings and alarms, Ethernet and IP applications, high quality video distribution for local TV applications, are all connected over 1 simple OTN network system, carrying the information completely transparently.

Depending on the required complexity of the network, OTN supports a variety of different topologies, including the interconnection of many smaller OTN rings.

Its scalable architecture, flexible configuration and non-stop operation make OTN a perfect match for the electricity industry. Take a look at the benefits of an OTN.
